I love how heroines have changed over the years. We have more options than those virginal teens, desperate for a savior to swoop in and secure their inheritance before they're married off to an unscrupulous third cousin. Those types of romances are still written, and continue to sell, but even the historicals coming out often reflect modern attitudes and themes. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.
But just think of what we're seeing now. The heroines aren't necessarily meeting their heroes at a fancy ball anymore. Oh no. Now they could be hunting him down - fully armed and dangerous. Or she could be protecting him for a change. We can choose to read about petticoats and fans, or go for tight black leather, vampy boots, and wicked guns. Forget shrinking violets, this chick is going to ride him to the ground and leave him with a smile and memories he'll never forget.
Sure, tastes will dictate what people choose to buy, and there are certainly comfort levels to consider, but the options we see now are what I really appreciate. Our characters don't even have to be entirely human. They can be part machine, locked and loaded. They can be shapeshifters, transforming on a whim. They can walk the night and crave an iron-rich diet and sunblock. To each, his or her, own. The tone can be serious or hilarious, but the options are out there, and those choices are worth celebrating.
